Volleyball Falls to Springfield, 3-1

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Smith College volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 14-25, 22-25) decision to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Springfield College on Tuesday evening. The Pioneers move to 10-6 and 4-1 in league action while the Pride improves to 16-1 and 5-0 on the season. 

Highlights
  • With Springfield ahead 17-16 in the first set, the Pioneers tallied five of the next six points to claim the lead 20-17 capped off with a kill by Olivia Teske (Minneapolis, MN/South High Minneapolis)
  • The Pride responded settling to a 21-21 tie finishing with a kill by Maeve Voltz
  • Smith put forward one final push to win the first set 25-22 after a kill by Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein) 
  • Springfield began the second set with an early 6-2 advantage
  • The Pioneers attempted to close the gap coming within one point of the Pride at 10-9
  • Springfield continued to pull away finishing the second set 25-18
  • With Smith trailing 14-12 in the third frame, the Pride recorded six of the next seven points to push the lead to 20-13
  • The Pioneers attempted to disrupt their offense but Springfield pulled away with the 25-14 victory in the third set
  • In the final frame, the Pride jumped out to a 14-8 lead 
  • Springfield continued to pull away increasing their advantage to 22-13
  • The Pioneers responded with eight of the next nine points to come within striking distance of the Pride behind 23-21
  • Springfield was able to finish the night off of a kill by Natalie Billet claiming the 25-22 victory and the match 3-1

Notes

  • Abby Hunt (Mandeville, LA/Fontainebleau) led the Pioneer attack with nine kills 
  • Meg Hopkins (Matthews, NC/Covenant Day School) finished the night with 23 assists while Ruby Woodward (Winchester, MA/Winchester) added 11 for Smith 
  • Olivia Teske (Minneapolis, MN/South High Minneapolis) posted eight digs while Gabby Beckman (Berthoud, CO/Grandview) produced seven
  • Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein) recorded a season-high five blocks
