NORTH DARTMOUTH - The No. 4 Smith basketball team outscored Mitchell 23-12 in the second quarter to pull away from the Mariners and record a 93-52 victory in the first game of the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament hosted by UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon.
Sofia Rosa (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) and
Selam Maher (Hopkins, MN/St. Louis Park) combined for 34 points as the Pioneers won their first road game of the year to improve to 3-0.
Inside the Numbers
- Rosa totaled 17 points, three rebounds, two blocks and a steal in 23 minutes, while Maher produced 17 points and knocked down four three-pointers
- Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) added a double-double of 10 points, 11 rebounds and chipped in five assists
- Virginia Johnson (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) (15 points) and Maggie Fleming () (10 points) each recorded career-highs in points
- Smith owned a 42-38 edge in rebounds
- The Pioneers shot 51.5% from the floor, 38.9% from three-point range, and 50% from the free throw line
Game Highlights
- Tied at 10, Maher and Loo knocked down back-to-back three-pointers as Smith would end the quarter on a 7-0 run to make it 20-13 in favor of the Pioneers
- Maher scored the first seven points of the quarter for Smith as the lead grew to 18 (43-25) at the half
- The Mariners chipped away and would come as close as 14 with 6:54 on the clock, but Smith responded with a 10-run to go up 58-34 on Hannah Martin's (North Andover, MA/North Andover) three-pointer. Johnson's three-pointer as time expired in the third made it a 66-43 game
- In the fourth quarter, the Pioneers outscored Mitchell, 27-9, resulting in the final score
