NORTHAMPTON - Junior
Amelia Clairmont (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School) scored 18 points and dished out six assists as the No. 5 Smith basketball team overpowered Wheaton College, 76-40, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Wednesday evening inside Ainsworth Gymnasium.
With the win, Smith has won 13 in a row to improve to 19-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference, while Wheaton dropped to 12-9 on the year and 2-4 in the NEWMAC.
Game Highlights
- Smith never trailed in the game after starting out with a 4-0 lead on back-to-back buckets from Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and Katelyn Pickunka (Westhampton, Mass./Hampshire), but the Lyons stayed within a possession as Greta Mino knocked down a trey
- The Pioneers responded with an 11-0 run to lift the home team to a 21-10 lead after the first 10 minutes
- An explosive second quarter where Smith outscored Wheaton 26-4 created a 45-16 advantage in the half. In the second, the Pioneers went 4-of-7 from three-point range and shot 4-of-4 from the free throw line as Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) and Clairmont each finished with eight points
- Smith maintained its cushion throughout the second half and was able to mane of the reserves in the game for the fourth quarter as nine different players scored in the 76-40 win

- Clairmont knocked down 4-of-9 from three-point range and grabbed two rebounds
- Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) shot 7-of-10 from the field to finish with 18 points
- Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) chipped in 13 points off the bench, while Katelyn Pickunka (Westhampton, Mass./Hampshire) added 12 points and seven rebounds
- Smith forced 29 turnovers and owned a 35-29 advantage on the boards
- The Pioneers shot 46.7% (28-of-60) from the floor, 45% (9-of-20) from three-point range and 78.6% (11-of-14) from the free throw line
- Wheaton went 16-of-52 from the field, just 17.6% (3-of-17) from long distance and 5-of-9 from the free throw line
