Lacrosse Captures Dominating 16-5 Win over Wellesley in Conference Opener

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College lacrosse team cruised past Wellesley, 16-5, in their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest of the 2023 season on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 4-3 on the year and 1-0 in conference action, while the Blue drops to 2-3 and 0-1.

How it Happened
  • Smith got a point on the board when Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) found the back of the net from a pass by Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) after 3:09 elapsed.
  • Wellesley responded with goals from Willa McGough and Finley Tipton until the Pioneers captured a 4-0 run capped off by a goal from Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) in the final two seconds of the first period.
  • The Blue's McGough opened the second quarter with a free position goal until Reese Gittelman (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Preparatory) answered with back-to-back goals with assists from Sydney Havlick (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) and Tschider
  • With 2:45 remaining on the clock Gittelman sent a pass to Bella DeAngelo (Portsmouth, R.I./Moses Brown) to increase Smith's lead to 8-3 after the first half
  • Tatum Galuski (Ipswich, Mass.) and Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) opened the second half recording free position goals to set the tone of the third period 
  • Wellesley's Ryan Boone found the back of the net from a free position opportunity until Galuski sent a pass to Gittelman to lift the score to 11-4 after the third quarter 
  • Tschider opened the final frame with back-to-back goals followed by goals from Havlick and Emma Butterick (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) 
  • Boone added the sole goal of the final quarter for Wellesley until Caroline Sanders (Trabuco, Calif./Santa Margarita) found the back of the net with one second remaining to finish the game 16-5
Inside the Numbers
  • Both Gittelman and Sanders finished the day with a hat trick
  • Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge), Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge), and Tschider each collected a pair of goals 
  • DeAngelo, Galuski, Havlick, and Butterick added a goal
  • Brooke Testa (Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) finished with six saves
