Tennis Brings Strong Showing in Doubles in NEWMAC Opener

Box Score BABSON PARK - The Smith College tennis team's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener was against No. 18 Babson College Monday afternoon. 

In No. 1 doubles, Lili and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) were dictating play, showcasing strong doubles. The duo exchanged games with the top team from Babson, and then took the lead to go up 6-5. The Babson team upped their game to win the next three games and the match, earning the first doubles point of the day. 

In the No. 3 position, Dayana Caluna (Planfield, NJ/College Achieve) and Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy) had a strong showing. The duo exchanged games with the Beavers and were showcasing confident, aggressive doubles. At 5-5, Smith won two consecutive games to give them the 7-5 lead. The Beavers battled back to force a set tie-break. In the tie-break, Smith was unable to hold the momentum dropping the second point of the day 8-7 in a very tight match.  

In the No. 2 position, Olivia Monos (Wyomissing, PA/Wilson) and Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) were exchanging games with their opponents, when at 3-3, Babson won 3 consecutive games to go up 6-3. Monos and Sauber elevated their game to push the Babson two team. Sauber took control at the net while Monos was steady from the baseline to win three consecutive games to go 6-5. Babson claimed the next game, but the Smith two team continued to battle, winning the next game making the score 7-6. Sauber and Monos tried to hang on to momentum, but Babson proved to be too much, claiming the match 8-6 and the doubles sweep for the Beavers. 

In singles, the Babson team came out strong, claiming 1 through 6 singles to secure the 9-0 win.
