Softball Splits Series with Coast Guard

NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College softball team split a two-game set against Coast Guard Academy Saturday afternoon in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers took the first game by a 4-0 score, before falling in the later contest 6-5. The Pioneers are now 6-9 on the year with a 1-1 mark in the NEWMAC, while the Bears move to 13-3, 1-1. 

Game 1 Highlights
  • The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Cece Alaniz popped out to short, bringing in Riley Austin (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty)
  • Smith tacked on three more runs in the second to extend the lead to 4-0. Maegan Osmond (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) tripled to right, scoring Kiera Collins-Joseph (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) and Elinor Washington (Sacramento, CA/Pleasant Grove). Taylor Ang's (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) RBI single to right allowed Osmond to score. 
  • Lucy Helms (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) pitched a complete game shutout with four strikeouts. 

Game 2 Highlights
  • Leading 1-0 in the fourth, Selena Serna homered to left to make it 2-0 in favor of the Bears
  • The Pioneers erupted for four runs in the fourth to go ahead 4-2. Helms' RBI double brought in Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) and Ang, while Washington's single scored Helms
  • Coast Guard used a four-run fifth inning to gain back the lead, 6-4
  • Smith would get one more in the fifth as Osmond scored on a throwing error by the shortstop
  • The Pioneers had a final chance in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on third and two outs, but Coast Guard was able to get a popup to end the game.

Smith is scheduled to host Keene State for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 5 at 3:00pm.
