Tennis Falls to Wellesley in Regular Season Finale

Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Smith College tennis team suffered a 8-1 setback to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Wellesley College on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers move to 7-6 and 4-4 in conference play while the Blue improve to 7-8 and 6-2 in league action.

Highlights
  • In the number one position, Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) played a great three setter. L. Goshgarian showed incredible steadiness in the first set. The pair exchanged games throughout the set. At 6-5 down, L. Goshgarian was able to hold serve and force a set tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Mu went up 2 set points but L. Goshgarian battled back winning 4 straight points to take the set 8-6. In the second Set, Mu jumped out to a quick lead, going up 4-1. L. Goshgarian settled back into the match winning the next two games to make it 4-3. The pair exchanged games but at 5-4, Mu was able to close out the set forcing a third set tiebreaker. In the tiebreak, Mu was able to jump ahead to a 9-5 lead. L. Goshgarian saved three match points making the score 9-8. At 9-8, Mu shutdown L. Goshgarian's comeback taking the third set 10-8. 
  • In the number six position, Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy) picked up the lone point for Smith. Gibson dominated play from the baseline, keeping her opponent deep and moving her all over the court. After taking the first set 6-3, Gibson elevated her level of play and won the second set without dropping a game, taking the match 6-3, 6-0.
