Softball Ends Season with Split at Clark

WORCESTER - The Smith College softball team closed out their season with a split at Clark University in NEWMAC action Friday afternoon. The Pioneers came from behind in game one, 13-12, before a 10-9 loss in the nightcap.

  • Smith: 13-21, 4-12 NEWMAC
  • Clark: 6-29, 2-14 NEWMAC

Game 1 Highlights
  • Clark took a 4-0 lead in the first and added two more in the third before Smith plated five runs in the fourth inning
  • Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) tripled to right, scoring Lucy Helms (Alameda, Calif./Alameda), CeCe Alaniz (Bakersfield, Calif./East Bakersfield), and Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield)
  • Ang advanced to home on a throwing error by the third baseman and Elinor Washington (Sacramento, CA/Pleasant Grove) crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Lexi Balam (Lyndeborough, NH/Wilton-Lyndeborough Coop HS)
  • Clark responded with two runs in the fourth to pull ahead 7-5
  • The Pioneers added five runs in the fifth to which Clark responded with a five run sixth inning to go up 12-10
  • In the seventh, Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) doubled to center, would advance to third and scored on Maegan Osmond's (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) sac fly
  • Riley Austin (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty) and Shantz's RBI singles put Smith ahead 13-12 for the final score
  • Shantz was a perfect 4-for-4 on the afternoon

Game 2 Highlights
  • The bats stayed hot as the two teams combined for 19 runs
  • Smith led off the first with a Shantz homerun to center
  • Clark registered two five-run innings to go ahead 10-1 after the fourth
  • Alaniz homered, scoring two runs and Washington got three more on the board with her triple to right
  • A single by Osmond got Smith to within 10-7
  • The Pioneers added two more in the sixth but it was not enough as Clark went on to win
  • Five different players registered multiple hits
