No. 4 Coast Guard Tops No. 5 Smith in NEWMAC Tournament Quarterfinal

NEW LONDON, CT - The Smith College lacrosse team's season came to an end with a 13-5 loss to Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) quarterfinal Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers end the season with its most conference wins (5) since the 1999 season.

Game Highlights
  • In a low scoring opening quarter, the Bears took a 1-0 lead going into the second
  • After three quick goals by Coast Guard to start the second, Smith got its first score of the game midway throught the second
  • The Bears added two more and Smith tacked one on before the end of the half, making it a 6-2 lead for Coast Guard
  • Coming out of the break, Smith scored three of the next four goals to come within 7-5 before the Bears ended the game on a 6-0 run

By the Numbers
  • Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) led the offensive effort for Smith, finishing with two goals on three shots
  • Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont), Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge), and Caroline Sanders (Trabuco, CA/Santa Margarita) rounded out the scoring for Smith
  • Brooke Testa (Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) made a career-high 22 saves in the loss
  • Gianna Cascio totaled four goals to lead Coast Guard which finished with a 44-14 advantage in shots
  • The Bears also led in ground balls (43-23) and draw controls (16-6)
