Field Hockey Blanks UMaine Farmington in Caryl Newhof Classic Opener

NORTHAMPTON - Nine different players scored for Smith as the Pioneers cruised to a 10-0 win against UMaine Farmington in the sixth annual Caryl Newhof Classic opening game Friday evening. The Pioneers begin the year 1-0, while the Beavers start 0-1.

Highlights
  • The Pioneers scored four goals in the opening period by Laura Dreher (Durham, NH/Durham), Annika Peterson (Forest Hill, MD/North Harford), Abbey O'Meara (Wilton, CT/St. Luke's School) and Kaylee Newbanks (San Diego, CA/Rancho Bernardo)
  • In the second, Callahan Day (Shade Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) found the back of the net as Smith would take a 5-0 lead into halftime
  • Eva Kinnel (Newtown, PA/George School) and Caroline McShea (Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic) scored back-to-back in the third, while Elena Korinek (Stonington, CT/Stonington), Kaeli Bennett (Windsor, VT/Brewster Academy) and Day rounded out the fourth quarter scoring for Smith
  • Tallying their first career goals were Bennett and McShea
Inside the Numbers
  • Rory Harper (Wayne, PA/Radnor) made one save to record her fifth career shutout
  • The Pioneers ended the day with advantages in shots (30-3), shots on goal (16-1) and penalty corners (12-1)
  • Smith will be playing in their sixth consecutive Caryl Newhof Classic championship game
