Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. - The Smith College volleyball team fell to SUNY New Paltz, 3-1, in their season opener at the Scranton Invitational on Friday evening. 

Highlights

• The first set of the night was a back-and-forth battle with the Pioneers behind 15-13 until New Paltz pulled away with a six-point to bring the score to 21-13.
• Smith fought back with a 7-2 run reduce the deficit to 23-20 until New Paltz pulled away with a 25-21 victory in the first set.
• In the second set both teams exchanged points with Smith trailing 8-7 until the Pioneers pulled away with a 6-1 run bringing them to a 13-9 edge.
• New Paltz responded with a 7-2 run to gain a slight 16-15 lead.
• Smith pulled away maintaining the edge over the Hawks for the remainder of the period finishing ahead 25-21.
• The Pioneers began the third set with a 12-8 advantage until New Paltz pulled away with a six-point run. 
• The teams exchanged the lead until the Hawks finished with a the edge 25-23 to bring the overall score to 2-1. 
• In the fourth period New Paltz jumped out to an early 15-7 lead.
• The Hawks continued an aggressive attack until they finished 25-12 and claimed the 3-1 victory over the Pioneers.

Notes

• Abby Hunt (Mandeville, LA/Fontainebleau) led the Pioneers with 10 kills (hitting .261) while Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein) totaled nine kills
• Ruby Woodward (Winchester, MA/Winchester) tallied 23 assists and seven digs in her collegiate debut

The Pioneers resume competition in the Scranton Invitational tomorrow on Saturday, September 2 at 11 am against Swarthmore College. Later they face host University of Scranton for a 4 pm contest.
