AMHERST - The Smith College soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at No. 11 Amherst Sunday afternoon in a game that was delayed three times by lightning on Gooding Field. The Mammoths improved to 2-1 on the season, while Smith dropped to 1-1-1.
Game Highlights
- The Mammoths took all nine shots in the first half, but could not find the back of the net. Alyssa Huynh had a golden opportunity in the first 10 minutes, but her first shot was saved by Smith goalkeeper Skylar Smith (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional), and her rebound attempt connected with the crossbar.Â
- Early in the 28th minute, Patience Kim had a shot stopped by Smith, and her rebound attempt was blocked by a Smith defender.Â
- The Mammoths were finally able to crack the code early in the second stanza. Charlotte McGuire's throw-in from the right sideline, just inside the midfield stripe, bounced off a Pioneer defender's head to the feet of Jessica Lomo.  Lomo quickly slotted a ball between two Pioneers and toward the goal. Noridzro raced onto the ball a split second before Smith could grab it, flicking it over the goalkeeper's shoulder and into the goal with 41:36 remaining,Â
- Smith's best chance came with 22:10 remaining but the Amherst goalkeeper reached back behind her head and flicked the ball forward to preserve the win
Inside the Numbers
- The Mammoths finished with a 19-2 edge in shots. Amherst took seven corner kicks in the game to the Pioneers two
- Smith's Smith made a career-high six saves, while the Mammoths' Fickes made one.
