Soccer Begins NEWMAC Slate with 0-0 Tie at Emerson

Box Score BOSTON - The Smith College soccer team battled its way to a 0-0 draw with defending NEWMAC Champions Emerson College Saturday afternoon in the NEWMAC opener for both teams. The Pioneers are now 1-1-2 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play, while the Lions are 1-4-1, 0-0-1 NEWMAC.

Game Highlights
  • The early minutes of the game saw the Emerson offense push into Smiths side of the field, earning a corner kick just over a minute into the game but the Smith defense was able to clear the attempt and keep the game scoreless.
  • Emerson continued to dominate possession and had several scoring opportunities, however Skylar Smith (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional) was able to deny all shots on goal by the Lions
  • As the first half progressed, Smith managed to create one scoring opportunity with a shot from Seychelle Brainard (Kaneohe, HI/Punahou School), but Emerson kept the game knotted at 0-0 
  • In the closing minutes of the game, both teams committed fouls as they fought for control of the midfield and neither team was able to generate any scoring chances, resulting in the draw
Inside the Numbers
  • The Lions were dominant on the afternoon, holding a 17-1 advantage in shots with an 11-0 edge in corners
  • Skylar Smith (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional) made six saves in the shutout.
