WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Smith College volleyball team defeated New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival WPI 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-19) on Tuesday evening. The Pioneers improve to 9-5 and 3-0 in league action while the Engineers drop to 4-8 and 1-2 in conference play. 

Highlights

• WPI started the first set with a 9-5 lead until the Pioneers delivered six unanswered points to claim the lead 11-9
• Both teams exchanged points with the Engineers with a deficit no greater than six points until Smith won the first set 25-20
• The Pioneers jumped out to an early 10-3 advantage in the second set
• WPI came close to Smith falling just behind 22-19 but an ace from Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein) won a second set for the Pioneers 25-20 
• Smith started the final set with another early 13-4 edge 
• The Engineers pushed to reduce the margin but a kill by Abby Hunt (Mandeville, LA/Fontainebleau) secured the 25-19 victory for Smith and the 3-0 sweep 

Notes

• Abby Hunt (Mandeville, LA/Fontainebleau) led the Pioneers offense with 13 kills averaging 4.33 kills per set and hitting an impressive .600
• Ruby Woodward (Winchester, MA/Winchester) posted 17 assists while Meg Hopkins (Matthews, NC/Covenant Day School) notched 15 
• Olivia Teske (Minneapolis, MN/South High Minneapolis) took charge of the Smith defense with seven digs
