NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College soccer team got its first win of the 2023 season as the Pioneers defeated Nichols, 4-1, on Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 1-0-1 on the year, while the Bison drop to 0-3-0.
"It was an impressive team effort tonight," said head coach Kathy Brawn. "Our players showed great resolve and adaptability to regain the lead and secure the win. It was fun to celebrate the first victory of 2023 but we"ll get right back after it as we prepare for two strong opponents in Union and Amherst."
Highlights
- Smith opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Karenna Kung (Salem, CT/Salem) sent a pass from the left side to the top of the box where Alex Kiernan (Schwenksville, PA/Abington Friends School) was waiting and one-touched it into the bottom right of the net
- The Bison responded just over five minutes later as Emily Feisthamel's shot soared past the diving reach of the Smith keeper
- Kyla Warner (Katy, TX/Tompkins) scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 55th minute as she took a pass across the cage from Raven Tebbetts (North Haven, CT/North Haven) to go ahead
- Smith tacked on goals by Abby Dickson (Deerfield, NH/Concord) and Karenna Kung (Salem, CT/Salem) for the 4-1 final
Inside the Numbers
- The Smith defense held the Bison to four shots on goal, and the offense generated 12 shots with 10 on target
- The Pioneers held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks
- Warner and Dickson scored their first career goals
- Skylar Smith (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional) made three saves for her first caerer win
