Rosa, Ruffner Post Double-Doubles in Win Over MIT

NORTHAMPTON - Sofia Rosa (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) and Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) each produced double-doubles to power the Smith basketball team to an 82-54 win over MIT in a non-conference match up Wednesday inside Ainsworth Gymnasium. 

With the win, the 15th-ranked Pioneers improved to 9-2 on the year, while the Engineers slipped to 8-3 overall. 



Inside the Numbers
  • Rosa notched her fifth double-double of the year with 24 points and 14 rebounds, while Ruffner finished with 17 points, 12 boards and three assists
  • Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) added a career-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists
  • The Pioneers, who lead all Division III in field goal percentage, shot 50% (34-of-68) from the field, 35.7% (5-of-14) from three-point range, and 81.8% (9-of-11) from the free throw line
  • The Engineers shot 34.3% (24-of-70) from the floor, 23.8% (5-of-21) from long distance, and 25% (1-of-4) from the free throw line 
  • Smith led the way in rebounds (45-29), points in the paint (56-32), and second-chance points (26-12)
Game Highlights
  • The two teams kept it close early on until a 7-0 run midway through the opening quarter put Smith on top 15-9. Martin's three-pointer as time expired made it 28-17 in favor of the Pioneers.
  • MIT responded with a 6-0 spurt to open the second on layups by Christina Antonakakis, Elise Harvey and Kamsi Nwogu to pull within five, 28-23. The Engineers got as close as 34-31, but Smith closed out the half on a 6-0 run to make it 40-31 at halftime. 
  • A deep three-pointer by Ruffner pushed Smith's lead to 16 (52-36) midway through the third quarter and the Pioneers advantage stretched to 57-36 on Ally Yamada's (Seal Beach, CA/Fairmont Prep Academy) shot from beyond-the-arc. The Engineers proved to be dangerous from three and knocked down back-to-back treys to come within 59-45 with under two minutes to go. 
  • After a three-pointer by Elise Harvey to open the final stanza made it a 13-point game, Smith closed out the fourth on a 19-4 run to secure the win
