#17 Basketball Earns Crucial Road Win at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, CT - A 25-point third quarter helped the Smith College basketball pull away for a key 77-55 road win at Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tilt Wednesday evening. 

Smith, who enters the week ranked No. 17 in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Poll, pushed its record to 16-3, 5-1 against conference opponents. The Bears dip to 15-5, 4-2. 

Inside the Numbers
  • Graduate student Sofia Rosa (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) posted her seventh double-double of the year, finishing with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds
  • Senior Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, CA/Fairmont Prep Academy) shot 6-of-9 from long distance to notch 22 points
  • First-year Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) added nine points, nine rebounds and four assists
  • Smith ended the night with advantages in rebounding, (48-28), second-chance points (20-4), points in the paint (50-34), and bench scoring (13-5).
  • The Pioneers shot 50% (34-of-68) from the field, 33.3% (7-of-15) from three-point range, and 50% (2-of-4) from the free throw line
  • Coast Guard shot 38.7% (24-of-62) from the floor, 14.3% (1-of-7) from long distance, and 54.5% (6-of-11) from the free throw line
Game Highlights
  • The teams went back and forth in the opening minutes of the first period until Jane Loo's (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) layup at 5:31 sparked a 16-3 run to close out the frame
  • The Bears began the second stanza with back-to-back buckets and a free throw to come within 22-14 with 7:33 remaining. Martin gave Smith a 12-point lead midway through the period and the visitors would go into halftime ahead 32-23.
  • Smith's offense exploded for a 25-point third quarter as Yamada drained back-to-back threes late in the period. The Pioneers shot 75% from three and 55% from the field in the third and led by 19 (57-38) going into the fourth
  • Rosa kicked off the fourth with a layup but Coast Guard began to chip away and found themselves trailing by 12 with 6:21 remaining. Smith ended the game on a 14-4 run thanks to nine points by Yamada for the 77-55 final.
