NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College field hockey team could not recover from surrendering a pair of goals in the opening period as it was defeated by WPI, 5-0 in a NEWMAC contest Tuesday evening.

Game Highlights

• The Engineers opened up the scoring in the sixth minute before tacking on another goal three minutes later
• The visitors added a tally in the third and two more strikes in the fourth to complete the scoring in the 53rd minute
• Callahan Day (Shady Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) totaled a team-best three shots for the Pioneers
• Smith goalkeeper Emma Newman (Clarks Summit/Abington Heights) registered seven saves 
• WPI owned a slight 15-14 advantage in shots, while Smith held a 6-3 edge in corners
