Smith Punches Ticket to NEWMAC Title Game; Rosa Scores 1,000th Career Point in Win Over MIT

NORTHAMPTON - Sofia Rosa (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) scored her 1,000th career point as No. 15 Smith College defeated MIT, 85-66, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal on Friday night inside Ainsworth Gymnasium. 

With its 10th straight win, second-seeded Smith improves to 24-3 overall and advances to the NEWMAC Tournament final for the fourth year in a row. MIT drops to 19-8 on the season. 

Inside the Numbers
  • Rosa was 8-of-10 shooting and added seven rebounds. She scored 635 points during her first three years at Tufts and has 379 points this season. 
  • Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, CA/Fairmont Prep Academy) scored a game-high 24 points, while Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) contributed 17 points, six assists, three reounds, and knocked down a career-best five 3-pointers
  • Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) added seven points with nine rebounds and eight assists
  • Smith shot 55.7% from the field, 46.4% from beyond-the-arc, and 80% from the free throw line
Game Highlights
  • With the score knotted at 7-7 just over three minutes left in the opening quarter, MIT's Angie Choi and Elise Harvey knocked down back-to-back threes to go up 13-7. Th visitors pushed the lead to 17-9 with 3:01 remaining, but Smith closed out the frame on a 7-2 run to come withing 19-16
  • Martin drained back-to-back 3-pointers to go up one and Smith pushed its advantage to nine, 37-28, with 2:41 left in the period. MIT orchestrated a 6-0 push to trail 37-34 at the half. 
  • In the decisive third quarter, the two teams went scoreless during the opening two minutes before Smith generated a 18-4 run to go up 54-37. MIT chipped away and got to within 58-46 at the end of the third.
  • Smith used an 18-4 run to open the fourth that cemented the win for the Pioneers
