NORTHAMPTON - Five players finished in double-figures as the No. 14 Smith College basketball team eased past Mount Holyoke College, 84-26, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) outing on Wednesday night.
Smith, which appeared in the the initial NCAA Division III Regional Rankings, is now 19-3, 7-1 against conference foes, while the Lyons are now 2-20, 0-8.
Inside the Numbers
- Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) finished with a career-high 19 points and knocked down 5-of-7 from three-point range
- Ella Sylvester (Everett, WA/Everett) also added a career-best 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting to go with three rebounds
- Selam Maher (Hopkins, MN/St. Louis Park) tacked on 13 points with six assists and three boards, while Virginia Johnson (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) had career-highs in points (11) and rebounds (5)
- Smith shot 49.2% (31-of-63) from the floor, 48.3% (14-of-29) from beyond-the-arc, and 72.7% (8-of-11) from the free throw line
Game Highlights
- Holding an 11-9 lead with just over three minutes left in the first quarter, Smith used a 9-2 burs to close out the frame to seize control at 20-11 following a jumper by Martin
- Smith shot 53% from the field and outscored Mount Holyoke 22-2 in the second which resulted in a 42-13 halftime advantage
- The Pioneers would extend its lead to 62-15 in the third on a jumper by Sylvester and a bucket from Uta Nakamura (Manhattan, NY/Long Island Lutheran) with 50 seconds left in regulation allowed Smith to gain its largest margin of the game at 84-26.
