Smith Tennis Downs St. Lawrence 6-3

Box Score ORLANDO, FL - The Smith College tennis team picked up a 6-3 win over St. Lawrence University on Tuesday at the USTA National Campus. With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 5-2 on the year. 

Match Highlights
  • The first point of the day for Smith came in the No. 3 doubles position. Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy) and Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) quickly jumped ahead to a lead and did not let up, only dropping 3 games to secure the 8-3 win. 
  • Smith, who has been dominant in doubles this season so far, brought that dominance to the singles court today, winning 5 of the 6 singles points. 
  • The second point of the day, and the first point in singles came from Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest). L. Goshgarian returned to play for the first time since the team's match against Nichols. She came back in great form, playing smart tennis to win her match 6-1, 6-2.
  • Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) was quick to add another point to Smith's total. The Knoxville, Tennessee native flourished in the Orlando heat, showcasing her aggressive play. After winning the first set 6-0, her opponent, Holl Jesperson added more pressure jumping out to the 3-4 lead. Hauser won three straight games to secure the 6-0, 6-4 win. 
  • Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) was the first of three, three set singles matches of the day. After winning a close first set 7-6 (4), C. Goshgarian's opponent Y. Karera found another gear and won the second set 6-2. C. Goshgarian quickly reset going into the match super-tiebreak and closed out the set and the match with her 10-5 win. 
  • The match was clinched for Smith in the number 6 position. Sophomore, Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, NJ/College Achieve), showed incredible belief in herself. After dropping the first set 6-2, and being down 4-1 in the second, Caluna leveled out her tactics to win 5 straight games and secure the second set 6-4. In the 10-point match tie-break, Caluna continued her high-level of play to win the match 10-7, closing the match out with an ace. 
  • The final point of the day came in the number four position. Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) played a very gritty opponent. Jung played smart, patient tennis - she was able to outlast her opponent in long rallies and take offense whenever the opportunity presented itself. She won her match 6-2, 6-4, giving Smith their final point in their 6-3 win.
