NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College tennis team earned a 9-0 sweep over Emerson in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday. The Pioneers improve to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
Doubles Highlights
- The first point of the day for Smith came in the number two doubles position. First year duo Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) teamed up again for the first time since the fall to take on Susie-Jane Wilson and Evlin Walsh of Emerson. The pair played lights out doubles, only dropping the first game of the match to then win 8 games straight securing the 8-1 win.
- The second point of the day came from the number three position where Senior, Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy) teamed up with Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton). Gibson celebrated her senior day by playing incredible doubles. She was a wall up at net and used her serve to easily end points. Her and her partner won their match 8-2.
- Lili and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) secured the doubles sweep for Smith in the number one position. The pair kept things simple, playing smart, steady doubles to secure the 8-3 win.
Singles Highlights
- Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) both made quick work of their opponents in the number one and three positions respectively. Hauser took on senior, Susie-Jane Wilson. Hauser found the perfect balance of consistent yet aggressive play to earn her the 6-2, 6-1 win. Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) continued to keep things simple in her singles play, only dropping 2 games in her 6-0, 6-2 victory.
- The third point of the day came in the number four position, Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) quickly took the first set 6-2. In the second set, Gabby McGovern of Emerson started to cause more trouble for Wang, and went up 4-3. Wang reset her mentality, and was ale to win the next three games to win the match 6-2, 6-4.
- The fourth point came in the number 2 position which was the closest match of the day. Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) of Smith took on graduate student Sammi Perry of Emerson. In the first set, Goshgarian and Perry exchanged games. Perry was up 6-5. On seve, C. Goshgarian saved a set point to force a set-tiebreak. In the tiebreak, C. Goshgarian was flawless, winning the tie-break 7-0. In the second set, C. Goshgarian took momentum and won the match 7-6(0), 6-2.
- Senior, Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy) went undefeated on senior day. She played high energy singles against Evlin Walsh of Emerson. Gibson only dropped 4 games in her 6-3, 6-1 win.
- The final point of the day, securing the sweep, came in the number 5 position where Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, NJ/College Achieve) of Smith took on Amaya Briones. Caluna played steady tennis, keeping a level-head against a tough opponent. Caluna earned the 6-2, 6-2 win.
