Tennis Cruises Past Mount Holyoke, 8-1

Box Score SOUTH HADLEY - The Smith College tennis team swept doubles en route to an 8-1 win at Mount Holyoke College Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. 

With the victory, Smith improves to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the NEWMAC. The Lyons drop to 8-5, 2-2 NEWMAC. 

Doubles Highlights
  • The first point of the day came in the number one position where Lili and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) played lights out tennis on their way to an 8-1 win. 
  • The second point of the day came in the number three doubles position where Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy) and Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) had to battle against a tough three team from Mount Holyoke. At 7-6 up, Wang had a great service game, setting her partner up for easy finishes up at net securing the 8-6 win. 
  • Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) finished the sweep in the number two slot. After jumping out to a quick 6-2 lead, the Lyons started to battle back. at 7-5, Sauber had a lights-out service game, finding her spots and making it easy for her partner to finish the point up at net. They secured the match 8-6. 
Singles Highlights
  • Smith carried their momentum from singles into doubles. Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) only dropped one game between both her singles and doubles matches, winning her singles match 6-1, 6-0. 
  • The clinch for Smith came in the number one position where Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) put together an impressive match against Annika Chai from Mount Holyoke. Hauser played smart and aggressive tennis against the gritty Mount Holyoke player, only dropping one game in her 6-0, 6-1 win. 
  • Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) was the third singles win of the day for Smith. Jung played an impressive match of aggressive tennis finishing just moments after fellow first year, Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden), with her own 6-1, 6-0 win. 
  • Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) played steady tennis in the number two position to outlast her opponent getting the 6-2, 6-3 win. 
  • The only loss of the day came in the number 5 position, where Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) took on Natali Kostadinovic. After dropping a close first set 7-4 in the tie-break, Wang resettled into the second. Wang found her game and trusted her play in the biggest moments to win the second set 7-5. In the third set super-breaker, Wang found herself trailing for most of the tie-break. At 8-7 down, Wang played a big point to level the match. Kostadionvic, steadied up to win the next two points, earning the only point for the Lyons. 
  • Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, NJ/College Achieve) was the final singles victory of the day for Smith. After dropping her first set 6-3 to a tricky opponent, Caluna readjusted and went on to win the next two sets without dropping a game.
