NORTHAMPTON - Senior
Lexi Balam (Lyndeborough, NH/Wilton-Lyndeborough Coop) went 3-for-3 with two RBI in game two to help Smith split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) series against Babson Sunday. The visitors won the opener 8-2 before Smith took a 7-3 decision in game two. With the split, Smith moves to 13-8-1 overall and 5-3 in the NEWMAC. The Beavers are now 13-14 on the year and 4-6 in conference play.
Game 1: Smith 2 Babson 8
- Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) and Cece Alaniz each registered one hit and an RBI to lead the offense
- Pitcher Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) allowed seven runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in six innings
- Babson pitcher Maura O'Reilly struck out 11 and only allowed three hits
- Trailing 3-0 in the third, Ang's RBI double to center scored Balam
- The Beavers got four runs in the fifth and sixth before Cece Alaniz's double brought home Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield)
- Babson added a run in the seventh for the 8-2 final score
Game 2: Smith 7 Babson 3
- Lucy Helms (Alameda, CA/Alameda) threw a complete game with three strikeouts and one walk
- Balam was perfect at the plate and Shantz went 2-for-4 with three RBI
- After being down 2-0, Smith tied the game in the third on an RBI double by Molly Taketa (Redmond, Wash./Woodinville). Taketa scored from third on Ang's sacrifice bunt
- Smith went up for good in the fourth as Taz Tami and Lucy Allen (West Boylston, MA/West Boylston) scored when Balm doubled to center
- Shantz hit a solo homerun in the fifth and knocked two more runs on a single up the middle
