NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College tennis team cruised to an 8-1 win over Springfield in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Tuesday afternoon. With the win, Smith improves to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The 10 wins are the most since the 2002-03 season and Smith has earned hosting rights for the first time dating back to 2004.
Doubles Highlights
- The first point of the day came for Smith in the number two doubles position where Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) made quick work of Kate Rosselli and Alyssa Elliott of Springfield. The pair played lights out doubles only dropping one game in their 8-1 win.
- First years Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) and Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) earned the second point of the day for Smith. The duo took on Kelly McGoldrick and Natalia Peyon. Peyon and McGoldrick managed to keep the score close at the start of the match, but at 4-3, Smith was able to win the next 4 games to secure the match 8-3.
- The lone point for Springfield came in the number one doubles position. Kapom Vettayawaikoon and Pam Manataweewat of Springfield played a great game of doubles to get the number one duo from Smith, Lili and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest), off balance. The Goshgarians started to find their groove, but the serving game of Vettayawaikoon ended up being too strong and at 7-4 she was able to serve out the match, securing the point for Springfield.
Singles Highlights
- Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) continued to show her dominant play in the number 4 position. For the second match in a row, Jung has been the first player to finish their singles match. In her match against Kelly McGoldrick of Springfield, she only dropped one game in her 6-0. 6-1 win.
- First year Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) played solid tennis from the baseline to disrupt the number one from Springfield. Hauser only dropped three games in her 6-2, 6-1 win, remaining undefeated against unranked opponents in her first year season.
- The clinch for Smith came in the number three position. Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) jumped a head to a quick lead in the first set, winning the set 6-1. In the second set, Aylssa Ellliot of Springfield started to disrupt play more. L. Goshgarian stayed steady and was able to close out the second set, earning the fifth and deciding point for Smith with her 6-1, 6-4 win.
- Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) finished her match soon after her sister. C. Goshgarian won a close first set 6-4. In the second set, her opponent Pam Manataweewat, adjusted her game and jumped ahead to a 4-0 lead. At 4-0 down, C. Gosghgarian started to make adjustments, but it wasn't enough to come back in the set. With the match decided, instead of playing a full third set, this match would be decided by a 10-point match tie-break. C. Goshgarian steadied up, winning 10 consecutive points and the match by a score of 6-4, 2-6, 10-0.
- In the number five position, Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) was also faced with a match tie-break. After dropping her first set 6-1 to Kate Rosselli, she came back fighting in the second set to win it 7-5. In the set-tiebreak, Wang followed suit of C. Goshgarian, playing super clean tennis, only dropping three points in her 10-3 tiebreak win!
- The final point of the day came in the number 6 position, where Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, NJ/College Achieve) played a full three setter (her third set started before the fifth point was won, meaning she started a third set). Caluna played steady tennis in the first set to win 6-4. In the second set, her opponent, Peyon, found her groove and started attacking more. Peyon was able to take the set 6-4, forcing a third set. In the third set, Caluna really settled in, playing very smart tennis to win the final point of the day for Smith and securing the singles sweep with her 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win.
