Smith Defeats Wheaton, 8-1

NORTON - The Smith College team wrapped up an impressive regular season with an 8-1 win at Wheaton in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers have won five of their last six and improve to 11-5 overall and 6-3 in league play, while the Lyons finish their season at 9-9 and 3-6. Smith advances to the NEWMAC Championship Tournament as the number four seed and will host fifth-seeded Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday, April 30 in the tournament first round. 

Doubles Highlights

  • Smith started the day with a sweep in doubles. The first point of the day came in the number one singles position where Lili and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) only dropped one game in their 8-1 win over Alissa Ortiz and Kara Greenly.
  • Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) finished soon after the Goshgarians playing dominant and aggressive doubles against Mareike Mueller and Asia Hollis of Wheaton. The number two pair won their match 8-2.
  • The third point of the day came from Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) and Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) in the number three doubles position. They also secured an 8-2 win over Taylor Wilson and Lila Haraj-Sai. 

Singles Highlights

  • The fourth point for Smith came in the number one position where Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) earned the 6-3, 6-1 win over Marieke Mueller. With this win, Hauser goes 7-2 in conference with her only losses  in conference being to athletes ranked in the top 15 in the country.
  • The lone victory for Wheaton College came in the number six singles position. Izzy Kruse of Wheaton took on Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, NJ/College Achieve) of Smith. Caluna battled and was determined to mix up play, trying everything to stay in the match. Kruse was able to close it out and get her team on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
  • The clinch for Smith came in the number three singles position. Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) played steady tennis, only dropping three games, winning her match 6-1, 6-2. 
  • Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) took on a tough opponent in the number four position. Taylor Wilson of Wheaton battled for every point. In the first set, Jung and Wilson had many long rallies. Jung was able to stay patient and wait for her opportunity to be aggressive. In the second set, Jung was able to shorten points, allowing her to quickly end the set and the match with a 6-1. 6-0 win. 
  • In the number two position, Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) took on a very consistent player Kara Greenly. C. Goshgarin was able to stay steady and earned the 6-4, 6-4 win. 
  • The final point of the day came in the number 5 position. Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) played a great balance of consistent yet aggressive tennis to win her match 7-5, 6-4.
