NEW LONDON - The Smith College lacrosse team's season came to an end with an 11-6 loss at Coast Guard in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers end 2024 with an 8-9 overall record, while the Bears improve to 12-4 on the year and advance ot the NEWMAC Semifinals against Babson. 

By the Numbers

• Caroline Sanders (Orange County, CA/Santa Margarita Catholic) scored twice to lead a group of five goal scorers for Smith
• Darci DeAngelis (Boise, ID/Boise) finished with four caused turnovers and two ground balls 
• Brooke Testa (Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) made 19 saves for the Pioneers

Game Highlights

• Trailing 2-0, Sanders tallied her 28th goal of the year to cut the lead in half. Coast Guard doubled up again before back-to-back goals by Emma Butterick (Windsor, CT/Windsor) and Kyra Hawk (San Jose, CA/The Harker School) tied the game at 3-3 heading into the second period
• The game remained scoreless for most of the second until Coast Guard generated two goals with under four minutes left int he quarter
• Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) scored her 100th career goal to open the second half, but Coast Guard came alive and lit up the scoreboard with four unanswered goals before the end of the third to head into the final period up 9-4
• Each team scored twice in the final period and CGA advanced to the next round
