Softball Swept by Wheaton in NEWMAC Opener

NORTON - The Smith College softball team struggled offensively as the Pioneers fell twice to Wheaton College this afternoon in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at the Clark Softball Field. 
Smith dropped an 8-0 (5 Inning) decision in game one followed by a 6-1 defeat in the nightcap. 

Smith is now 6-7-1 on the year and 0-2 in the NEWMAC. The Lyons improve to 10-9 overall and 4-0 in league play. 

Game 1: Smith 0 Wheaeton 8 (5 Innings)
  • Wheaton pounded out 10 hits for the game and scored four runs in the opening frame, before scoring twice in the second to take a 6-0 lead
  • The home team added a pair of runs in the fourth to enact the mercy rule after five innings of play
  • Smith starting pitcher Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) suffered the loss after giving up six runs on six hits to go with a pair of strikeouts
  • Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) and Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) each recorded hits for Smith
Game 2: Smith 1 Wheaton 6
  • Trailing 2-0, Smith made it a one-run affair with an RBI double from Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) in the sixth
  • The Lyons tacked on four in the sixth to go ahead 6-2
  • Smith had the bases loaded in the seventh but was unable to push any runs across the plate
  • Shantz went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Lucy Helms (Alameda, CA/Alameda) finished 2-for-3 at the plate
  • Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) took the loss allowing six runs on six hits with five strikeouts
