Shantz Sets Single Season Home Run Record in Friday's Split at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD - The Smith College softball team split Friday's twinbill on the road to Springfield Friday afternoon against the NEWMACs No. 1 team. The Pioneers opened the doubleheader with a 7-3 win followed by a 4-1 loss.

Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) set the single season home run record after hitting her 10th of the year. She breaks Ally Snyder's record of nine set in 2017.

Smith (20-15-1, 10-8 NEWMAC) reaches the 20-win mark for the first time since 2014. Springfield is now 26-8-1 overall and 14-4 in NEWMAC play.

Game 1 - Smith 7 Springfield 3
  • After three scoreless innings, Schantz's tenth homer of the season gave Smith a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
  • Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) gave Smith a 3-0 advantage when she lifted the ball over the fence in left in the top of the fifth.
  • Smith tacked on four more runs in the frame on a bases clearing three-RBI double by CeCe Alaniz (Bakersfield, CA/East Bakersfield) to the gap in right center and an infield hit by Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) made as the Pioneers took a commanding 7-0 lead.
  • Springfield attempted to rally and put together three runs in the bottom of the six, but that was all Smith starter Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) allowed on the day.
  • Doty improved to 11-7 with a complete game effort allowing eight hits and three runs for the Pioneers.
Game 2 - Smith 1 Springfield 4
  • Springfield struck for two runs in the bottom of inning number one as a wild pitch before an RBI knock for a 2-0 edge.
  • Smith got one back in the top of the second, but that is all the offense that Springfield starter Ashley Pugliese allowed in the nightcap.
  • Springfield added two in the fifth and sixth innings for the 4-1 advantage.
  • Ang collected two hits, while Helms took the loss.
