Vassar Tops Field Hockey, 5-1

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Callahan Day (Shady Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) scored the lone goal for the Pioneers as Vassar was too much to handle, earning a 5-1 win over Smith on Saturday afternoon.

Game Highlights
  • Vassar got on the board first about five and a half minutes into the first quarter as Sofia Beseth knocked home a penalty stroke to give the Brewers the early lead.
  • Beseth doubled the advantage about a minute and a half into the second period as she buried her second goal of the game.
  • Smith cut the lead in half about a minute later when Callahan Day (Shady Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) potted the lone Pioneer goal off an assist from Eva Kinnel (Newtown, PA/George School).
  • Bailey Mann gave the Brewers a 3-1 lead heading into halftime as she scored her first career goal off a feed from Anna Hazewindus with five minutes left in the opening half.
  • Zoe Robinson opened up the Vassar lead to three goals just under seven minutes into the third quarter as the first year's shot bounced off a Smith defender's leg and past the goalie for the first career goal.
  • Ella Martin's first career goal came off a rebound on a shot saved from Robinson in the final minute of the third quarter to hand Vassar a 5-1 victory at home.
  • Emma Newman (Clarks Summit/Abington Heights) made her first career start and stopped five shots in the loss
  • Kyleigh Poot (Fairfax, VA/Woodson) and Annie Wimsatt (Westerville, OH/Columbus Academy) each recorded a defensive save
