Smith Powers Past Mount Holyoke with 3-1 Win in NEWMAC Opener

South Hadley, MA – Smith College volleyball triumphed over Mount Holyoke 3-1 (25-17, 25-13, 19-25, 25-16) in the opening game of the NEWMAC slate at Mount Holyoke. The Pioneers improved their record to 12-1 overall and 1-0 in the NEWMAC. 

Match Highlights

  • Smith started strong, claiming the first two sets with decisive scores.
  • In the opening set, Smith dominated with a 25-17 win, propelled by 17 kills and an impressive .351 hitting percentage. Taylor Gwynne (Chapel HIll, NC/Carrborro) set the tone for the team with her playmaking ability, recording 45 assists, while Abby Hunt (Mandeville, LA/Fontainebleau) and Claudia Poehlmann (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) provided solid offensive support.
  • In the second set, Smith's offense remained potent, as they racked up 10 kills on only 19 attempts, with a standout hitting percentage of .474. The Pioneers capitalized on their service game, tallying five aces to secure a 25-13 victory. 
  • Mount Holyoke mounted a comeback in the third set, winning 25-19 behind a more efficient attack, including 11 kills and a .233 hitting percentage.
  • However, Smith regained control in the fourth set, closing out the match 25-16. Key contributions came from Gwynne, who added two service aces during crucial points, and Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein), who notched 9 kills and 6 blocks throughout the match.
  • Mount Holyoke struggled to contain Smith's offense, particularly in this final set, where Smith hit .393 as a team.

Box Score

  • Addison Klunder was a force at the net with 15 kills on 30 swings, hitting .333. 

  • Abby Sweeney added 9 kills and 6 blocks, while Mia Etheridge (Half Moon Bay, CA/Half Moon Bay) chipped in with 10 kills and a .400 hitting percentage.

  • Defensively, the Pioneers tallied 56 digs, led by Sarah Dankovich (El Paso, TX/Coronado) with 11.
