Cobleskill, NY. - The Smith College volleyball team swept Elmira and the host SUNY-Cobleskill in the final day of the SUNY-Cobleskill Tournament. This is the best start Smith College Volleyball has had to a season since 2005, when they started 7-1.

The first match of the day featured Smith facing off against the Elmira Soaring Eagles. The set scores were 25-11, 25-16, and 25-22.

The first set of the afternoon started off with a 7-0 run with Taylor Gwynne (Chapel HIll, NC/Carrborro) behind the service line. Gywnne would finish the day with 11 service aces, a new career high.

Smith would continue to extend the lead as Addison Klunder (Los Angeles, CA/The Buckley School) went on a seven point service run herself, which included four aces.

In the second set, Smith got off to a large 16-0 lead with Taylor Gwynne (Chapel HIll, NC/Carrborro) behind the service line as well.

During that service run, Abby Sweney totaled three kills on three swings to add to her total of six kills on the day. During

Smith finished out the set 25-16 and moved into the third set with a 2-0 advantage.

The third set started with a back and forth battle with Elmira taking a marginal 5-1 lead. Smith would continue to battle and keep pushing to tie the game back at 9-9.

Olivia Mendoza came out strong in the third set with seven kills on only nine swings.

The two teams continued to battle with Smith coming out victorious 25-22.

In the second match, Smith continued their hot streak as Abby Hunt (Mandeville, LA/Fontainebleau) came out swinging. Hunt finished the first set with eight kills on ten swings.

Smith finished the first set 25-13 with 16 kills and only two errors to hit .452 in the first set.

Smith hit even higher in the next set, hitting .480 as a team with 14 kills on 25 swings. The Pioneers would win the next set 25-16.

Smith would continue to finish the third and final set strong, winning 25-12.

In the first match against Elmira, Gwynne led the team with 11 service aces and added 34 assists with five kills as well. She is third in the NEWMAC with 9.58 assists per set.

In the second match, Hunt led the team with 12 kills on only 24 swings, hitting .458 through the three set match.

The Pioneers resume competition next weekend at the 3rd Annual Bonnie May Tournament where they host Galluadet and Middlebury on Friday evening at the opening match in Ainsworth Gymnasium at 5pm.
