No. 9 Basketball Completes Undefeated NEWMAC Season

WELLESLEY, MA - The Smith College basketball team completed an undefeated NEWMAC schedule with an 86-50 victory over Wellesley College on Saturday. 

The Pioneers (23-2, 11-0) will head to the conference tournament as the NEWMAC Regular Season Champions, having gone undefeated in NEWMAC play for the third time in the last four seasons. Postseason action kicks off on Wednesday, February 26 with the quarterfinals. 

Top Performers
  • Ally Landau (Livingston, NJ) finished with a season-high 24 points, three rebounds, and two assists. She drained 6-of-10 from three-point range. 
  • Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) added 13 points and 3 assists, while Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) pitched in 11 points
  • Jazmyn Washington (Los Angeles, CA/Birmingham Community Charter) totaled nine boards and six assists
By the Numbers
  • Smith shot 51.55% (34-of-66) from the floor, 37.9% (11-of-29) from three-point range, and 46.7% (7-of-15) from the free throw line
  • The Blue went 17-of-56 from the field, 5-of-21 from three, and 11-of-14 from the free throw line
  • The Pioneers controlled the glass, 46-29
Game Highlights
  • The Blue kept it close for the opening portion of the first quarter, up 6-5 at the 7:38 mark. A 14-0 run by Smith followed, featuring 11 points and a trio of deep balls from Landau. After 10 minutes of play, the Pioneers held a 23-10 advantage.
  • Wellesley utilized an early 7-2 stretch in the second quarter to get the game to 27-22 after a Caitlin Windross three. Landau and Loo both sank shots from behind the arc to get the margin back to double digits. Smith's lead swelled to 17 at 39-22 by halftime.
  • The visitors went up 20 a minute into the third quarter and stepped on the gas, outscoring the Blue 26-16 in the third stanza to take a 65-38 lead.
  • The Pioneers emptied the bench in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach.
