Waterville, ME – Smith College Tennis hit the road for a competitive weekend in Maine, facing Bates on Friday evening and Colby on Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats maintained steady control throughout the match, dictating the pace in both doubles and singles play to secure the win. Smith put up a strong fight in doubles, with all three pairs competing closely.

At No. 2 doubles, Natazya Simunyola (Lorton, VA/South County High School) and Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) battled fiercely but fell just short in a tight 5-7 match. In singles, Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) delivered a determined performance at No. 3, forcing a third-set tiebreak before ultimately falling 4-6, 7-5, 1-0.

Colby Highlights

Smith came out strong against Colby, showcasing resilience and adaptability across both doubles and singles play.

In No. 1 doubles, Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) fought back from a 4-2 deficit against Michaela Landry and Isabella Suk. Adjusting their strategy mid-match, the duo won four consecutive games to claim a 6-4 victory.

At No. 2 doubles, Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) and Natazya Simunyola (Lorton, VA/South County High School) demonstrated strong chemistry, using effective serves and net play to take a 4-3 lead. However, Colby's pair found momentum late, closing out the match 6-4 to secure the doubles point.

Smith's singles players put up a hard-fought battle across the lineup:

  • No. 4 Singles: Sophia Dube (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) faced Waka Aida, who jumped to a 4-1 lead in the first set. Dube responded with strategic shot-making to close the gap to 4-3 but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-2.
  • No. 5 Singles: Alexa Konstantopoulos (Waltham, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) delivered a gritty performance against Anna Rende, challenging her opponent's aggressive play. Konstantopoulos fought until the final point, narrowly falling 6-3, 6-4.
  • No. 6 Singles: Tabitha Bastress (Charlotte, VT/Champlain Valley Union High School) showed remarkable resilience. After dropping the first set 6-0, she found her rhythm in the second, using strong serving and precise returns to keep the match close. Serving at 4-5, Bastress pushed Colby's Amelie Gal to the limit before Gal clinched the 6-0, 6-4 victory.
