Smith Softball Splits Doubleheader on Tuesday Afternoon

CLERMONT, FL. – The Smith College softball team picked up a dominant 9-1 victory over Nazareth before battling hard in a 9-6 loss to Cortland on Tuesday afternoon.

Game 1: Smith 9, Nazareth 1 (6 innings)

Smith's bats came alive against Nazareth, racking up 12 hits and scoring in four straight innings to cruise to a run-rule victory.

  • Offense:

    • Ally Knutson (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) led the charge with a 2-for-3 performance, including a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI.
    • Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) delivered a clutch three-run home run to break the game open in the fifth inning.
    • Kat Wajerski (Bellevue, WA/Newport) continued her strong play, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs, and two RBIs.
    • Lucy Allen (West Boylston, MA/West Boylston) was a key contributor, reaching base in all four plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
    • Taz Tamai (Cincinati, OH/The Seven Hills School) added a double, while L. Hackett and Washington each chipped in a hit.
  • Pitching:

    • Gray (W, 2-1) was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game (6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 1 BB).
    • After surrendering a solo home run in the first inning, Gray settled in and retired 10 straight batters at one point.
  • Key Moment:

    • Smith broke the game open in the fifth with a three-run homer by Gray, extending the lead to 7-1. A two-run sixth sealed the win via the run rule.

Game 2: Cortland 9, Smith 6

In a back-and-forth contest, Smith held its own against a powerful Cortland offense before a late surge by the Red Dragons proved too much.

  • Offense:

    • Lily Hackett (Concord, NH/Concord) (1-for-3, 2 RBIs) delivered a key two-run single in the fourth to give Smith a temporary 4-2 lead.
    • Wajerski stayed hot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
    • Gray drew two walks and scored a run.
    • Ally Knutson (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) reached base twice and swiped a base.
    • Smith capitalized on Cortland's mistakes, scoring twice on errors.
  • Pitching:

    • Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) started and kept Cortland in check early before running into trouble in the fifth.
    • Aislinn Lavery (Franklin, MA/Franklin) and Lindsay Bennett (Sanford, ME/Berwick Academy) pitched in relief, but Cortland's offense surged with a four-run fifth and three-run sixth.
  • Key Moment:

    • With the game tied 2-2 in the fifth, Cortland strung together four hits and a walk to push across four runs. Smith battled back in the bottom half with two runs of its own, but the Red Dragons tacked on insurance runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
