Softball Splits Doubleheader at Westfield State

WESTFIELD, MA - The Smith College softball team split with Westfield State Wednesday afternoon at Sullivan Field, capturing a thrilling 5-4 win over Westfield State in Game 1 before dropping Game 2 6-0 in a contest shortened to five innings due to darkness.

Game 1: Smith 5, Westfield State 4

  • The Pioneers put immediate pressure on the Owls, scoring twice in the first inning and adding three more in the second. Sophomore Kat Wajerski had a breakout game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and anchoring the infield from third base.
  •  Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) stepped up with two crucial RBI, including a sacrifice fly that padded the lead, while Taz Tamai (Cincinati, OH/The Seven Hills School) caused havoc on the basepaths and reached base three times, scoring two of Smith's five runs.
  • The Pioneers showed patience at the plate, drawing seven walks and forcing Westfield into high-leverage situations inning after inning.
  • In the circle, Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) was clutch, working six innings with six strikeouts and giving the Pioneers a chance to win every frame. Lindsay Bennett (Sanford, ME/Berwick Academy) earned her first career save with a clean final inning to lock down the win.

Game 2: Westfield State 6, Smith 0 (5 inn.)

  • In the nightcap, Smith was unable to replicate its offensive rhythm from Game 1, falling 6-0 to Westfield in a shortened five-inning contest that was called due to darkness.
  • Ally Knutson (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) continued her impressive day, collecting two of Smith's four hits, including a leadoff double that gave the Pioneers their best scoring opportunity.
  •  Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) also delivered at the plate, going 2-for-2, and playing a clean game at shortstop.
  • Lindsay Bennett (Sanford, ME/Berwick Academy) returned to the circle for her second appearance of the day and battled through early innings against a hot Westfield lineup.
  • On defense, Taz Tamai (Cincinati, OH/The Seven Hills School), Lucy Hackett, and Wajerski held down the infield, limiting extra bases.
