NEW LONDON, CT. - The Smith College lacrosse team put up a tremendous fight but ultimately fell 10-9 in double overtime to Coast Guard in Saturday's NEWMAC Quarterfinal clash at Cadet Memorial Field.
Smith saw standout performances from Layna Fitzgerald (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral), Kyra Hawk (San Jose, CA/The Harker School), and Caroline Sanders (Orange County, CA/Santa Margarita Catholic), combining for eight goals and three assists.
Fitzgerald recorded her second hat trick of the season, while Hawk also finished with three goals and two assists.
The Pioneers came out firing, scoring three first-period goals, including two on the power play, to take a 3-2 lead after the opening frame.
Smith continued to press in the second, with Sanders converting a free position shot to push the Pioneers ahead 4-2. Coast Guard, however, responded with three straight goals to take a 5-4 advantage at the break.
Layna Fitzgerald (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) sparked a third-quarter rally for the Pioneers, scoring back-to-back goals to retake the lead, but Coast Guard answered with four consecutive tallies to regain control.
Smith refused to go away. Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont), Hawk, and Fitzgerald each found the back of the net early in the fourth to tie the game at 9-9, sending the contest into extra time.
Brooke Testa (Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) anchored the defensive effort with 12 saves in goal, including several critical stops during regulation and the first overtime period.
Despite a strong defensive stand from Smith, Coast Guard secured the game-winner with just over two minutes left in the second overtime.
Smith concludes the 2025 season with a 10-8 record, marking the program's first double-digit win season since 2017.
