Softball Drops Two to MIT

CAMBRIDGE, MA. – The Smith College softball team dropped a pair of NEWMAC contests against MIT on Sunday afternoon at Briggs Field. The Engineers took Game 1, 8-1, before claiming Game 2 by a score of 10-4.

Game 1: MIT 8, Smith 1

Smith broke through in the third inning, but an early surge by MIT was the difference in the opener.

  • Taz Tamai (Cincinati, OH/The Seven Hills School) delivered an RBI double to left center to plate Ava Lansbury (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty), who had reached on a walk.

  • Kat Wajerski (Bellevue, WA/Newport) also doubled for the Pioneers, helping Smith tally three hits in the game.

  • Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) went the distance in the circle, striking out three.

  • Smith played clean defensively, committing no errors.

Game 2: MIT 10, Smith 4

The Pioneers struck in the 4th inning of Game 2 but MIT's offense pulled away with a strong middle innings performance.

  • MIT scored four runs in the bottom of the third, however, Smith answered with four runs in the top half of the fourth. 
  • With the bases loaded, Lindsay Bennett (Sanford, ME/Berwick Academy) knocked in a run
  • Up next, Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) walked to gather another RBI. Lily Hackett (Concord, NH/Concord) and Taz Tamai (Cincinati, OH/The Seven Hills School) both followed that up with two more singles to knock in two more runs. 
  • Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty), Lindsay Bennett (Sanford, ME/Berwick Academy)Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) combined efforts in the circle, working through challenging MIT lineups.

  • Smith tallied six hits overall, including extra-base knocks from Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors).

UP NEXT

Smith returns to action next weekend for their final regular season series as they play host to Springfield on Friday and Coast Guard on Saturday.
