NORTHAMPTON — Smith College (field hockey1-0) secured a dominant 7-0 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington (0-1) with a strong offensive showing, highlighted by a trio of third-quarter goals, on Friday night in the annual Caryl Newhof Classic.
The Bears dominated the first quarter with
Callahan Day (Shady Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) scoring the opening goal at 8:04, assisted by
Annika Peterson (Forest Hill, MD/North Harford). Smith's aggressive offense forced multiple saves from the Beavers' goalie, Ella Grant, with shots from
Anouk Bosket (Jordanstown, Northern Ireland/Belfast Royal), Peterson, and
Isabel Johnson (Fort Worth, TX/Trinity Valley School). Smith maintained pressure through penalty corners and repeated attempts on goal, ending the quarter ahead 1-0.
The Bears surged ahead early in the second quarter with
Gracie Hylton (Easton, PA/Moravian Academy) netting her first goal of the season, assisted by
Halie Yung (San Jose, CA/Lynbrook), at 15:55. Day extended the lead with another goal at 20:17. Johnson and Peterson contributed with shots on goal, both saved by the Beavers' goalie, while
Iseul Park (Ann Arbor, MI/) made a crucial save against a shot by Ann Buffington, maintaining Smith's lead at the end of the half.
Hylton scored her second goal of the season at 31:21. Shortly after, Bosket added her first goal of her career, following a penalty corner by
Malia Lockhart (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), pushing the score to 5-0. Smith continued their momentum with
Maya Zager (Portland, ME/) finding the back of the net at 41:38, assisted by
Grace Irizarry (Pennington, NJ/The Pennington School), extending the lead to 6-0 by the end of the quarter.
Irizarry opened the fourth quarter with a goal just 13 seconds in, marking her first of the season and extending the lead to 7-0. The Smith defense held strong as Park made a key save against a shot from Zoey Pennell at 45:54. Peterson and Hylton both tested the Beavers' goalkeeper Grant with shots at 47:57 and 49:10, but Grant was able to keep them at bay.
Park made two saves to earn th win in goal.
