Field Hockey Shuts Out Westfield State, Secures Newhof Classic Crown

NORTHAMPTON — Smith College field hockey (2-0) defeated Westfield State University (1-1) with a decisive 4-0 victory, fueled by two fourth-quarter goals to secure the Caryl Newhof Tournament title. Annika Peterson (Forest Hill, MD/North Harford) and Ellie Szostalo (Gorham, ME/Gorham) were named to the All-Tournamebt Team, while Isabel Johnson (Fort Worth, TX/Trinity Valley School) earned MVP honors.

Smith opened the first quarter aggressively, capitalizing on a penalty corner early on. Maya Zager (Portland, ME/) broke the deadlock at 10:28, scoring her first goal of the season with an assist from Anouk Bosket (Jordanstown, Northern Ireland/Belfast Royal). Iseul Park (Ann Arbor, MI/) contributed defensively, making a critical save against a shot by Erin Murphy to maintain the Bears lead.

Smith made a strong offensive push in the second quarter, highlighted by a flurry of shots on goal. Sam Sparling (Croton on Hudson, NY/Croton Harmon) initiated the attack with a shot at 21:49, but it was Callahan Day (Shady Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) who led an impressive sequence with consecutive shots in the 28th minute, both saved by Westfield's Emma Gniadek. Despite several opportunities, the score remained unchanged as Gniadek stopped all efforts.

Smith continued their offensive pressure early in the third quarter, highlighted by Nikki Tridico's (Arlington, VA/) first goal of her career at 33:45, increasing their advantage to 2-0. Day was instrumental in setting up multiple opportunities, executing three penalty corners during the quarter, though Westfield's goalie made several key saves to keep the score in check. Despite Westfield's late penalty corner at 40:30, Smith's defense held strong, maintaining their shutout through the end of the period.

Smith delivered a dominant fourth quarter to secure a 4-0 victory over Westfield. Day was instrumental, scoring her third goal of the year at 48:52 and assisting Johnson's first goal of the season at 55:42. Smith outshot Westfield 11-3 in the quarter, with Day contributing five shots, while Park made three key saves to preserve the shutout.
