ATTLEBORO, MA. — The Smith College cross country team opened its 2025 season with an 11th-place finish at the Suffolk Short Course Classic, held Saturday morning at the Mark Coogan Cross Country Course in Attleboro, Mass.
The Bears scored 270 points in the 3K race and posted an average team time of 12:41, placing them ahead of several regional programs in a competitive 17-team field.
Junior
Sofia Jurusz (Wildwood Crest, NJ/Middle Township) led Smith with a time of 12:06.27, earning 41st overall. She was followed by sophomore Amelia Gronert (12:39.69, 63rd), junior
Catherine Collins (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) (12:49.11, 75th), and first-year
Indigo Olsen (Leadville, Colorado/Lake County High School) (12:49.31, 76th). First-year Avery Maiese rounded out the scoring five, finishing in 12:55.90 for 84th place.
First-year Abigail Lei (13:02.72, 92nd) and sophomore
Elise Kennedy (Middletown, CT/Middletown) (13:52.89, 129th) also turned in solid efforts in their season debuts.
Smith's top five runners finished within 50 seconds of each other, highlighting the team's depth and pack-running ability as they look ahead to the fall campaign.
The Bears return to action on September 20th at the Wesleyan Cardinal Invitational.
