Field Hockey Loses Heartbreaker in Double OT to Vassar, 3-2

NORTHAMPTON —After a second half surge that saw Callahan Day (Shady Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) score with four seconds left in the third quarter, the Smith College field hockey came up short, 3-2, to Vassar in double overtime on Saturday afternoon. The Bears dip to 3-2 on the year, while the Brewers improve to 3-2 overall.

First Half Highlights
  • The first quarter saw a strong defensive performance from Smith, highlighted by goalie Iseul Park's (Ann Arbor, MI/) crucial saves, including two back-to-back stops against Vassar's Sydney Day and Autumn Dowiak in the final minute. Ellie Szostalo (Gorham, ME/Gorham) contributed with a key defensive save on a shot by Vassar's Grace Wiley early in the game. Despite multiple penalty corners and shots on goal, the Bears were unable to convert, leaving the score tied at 0-0 at the end of the opening period.
  • The second quarter began with a series of offensive plays from the Brewers, culminating in a goal by Sierra Chow at 24:29, following a penalty corner just moments before. Vassar extended their lead shortly after, as Sophia Jammar, assisted by Sophie Gono, netted another goal at 28:19. Despite the pressure, Smith's defense, led by Park with a key save at 23:33, sought to counter, earning a penalty corner at 28:19 but unable to convert before the quarter concluded.
Second Half Highlights
  • Despite attempts from Anouk Bosket (Jordanstown, Northern Ireland/Belfast Royal Academy) and Ellie Szostalo (Gorham, ME/Gorham), Wiley's strong performance in goal for Vassar kept Smith at bay until Day's breakthrough at 44:56, assisted by Bosket. Smith executed five penalty corners in the quarter, underscoring their offensive push, while Park made key saves to prevent further Vassar scoring.
  • The fourth quarter began with Smith's Day quickly equalizing the score at 50:47, after a save by Vassar's Wiley. Smith's goalkeeper, Park, was instrumental in maintaining the tie, making numerous saves including a notable stop at 53:27. Despite multiple penalty corners and attempts by Vassar, Smith's defense held firm, with Park denying several shots, ensuring the game concluded in a 2-2 draw.
Overtime Highlights
  • In a tense overtime period, Smith's defense held strong against Vassar's persistent attack. Vassar managed five shots, including a critical save by goalie Park and a defensive save by Szostalo. Despite Vassar also earning three penalty corners, Smith maintained the 2-2 tie, preventing any scoring in the overtime session.
  • Vassar's Morris proved decisive, scoring the game-winning goal at 74:30, assisted by Sydney Yu, after previously having two of her shots saved and one go wide.
