Keller Scores in 1-1 Draw to Western New England

NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College soccer team played to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday against Western New England. The Bears move to 0-4-2 on the year, while the Golden Bears are now 1-3-2. 

First Half Highlights
The first half commenced with a solid defensive display from the Bears, highlighted by Sky Smith's (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional) three crucial saves in the initial 17 minutes, notably blocking shots from Sophia Scyocurka and Emma Withington. Smith pressed forward with offensive efforts, as Charli Kellaway (Derby, VT/North Country Union) led the charge with multiple attempts on goal, including a significant shot saved in the 43rd minute by Ainsley Napolitano. Despite several corner opportunities and shots from various players, the half concluded scoreless, with both teams displaying strong defensive resilience.

Second Half Highlights
The second stanza began with Smith fending off numbers attempts from Western New England, as Sky Smith (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional) made key saves in the 53rd and 55th minutes to maintain the stalemate. In the 72nd minute, Una Keller (Davis, CA/Davis) found the back of the net to give the Bears a brief lead. However, WNE quickly responded, equalizing just over a minute later through Sophia Scyocurka. Smith's defense, led by Sky Smith (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional), remained resilient, withstanding a barrage of shots to conclude the period in a 1-1 draw.

Game Notes
  • Sky Smith (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional) stood out as Smith's keeper, recording a season-high 10 saves in goal, allowing just one goal on 20 shots faced.
  • Una Keller (Davis, CA/Davis) scored the team's only goal, finishing with two shots and one on target.
  • Charli Kellaway (Derby, VT/North Country Union) contributed with three shots, two of which were on goal. 
  • Ainsley Napolitano made four saves for the Golden Bears
