Callahan Day (Shady Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) scored twice in the third quarter to lead the Smith College field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Wheaton College in the NEWMAC opener for both squads. The Bears improve to 4-3, 1-0 NEWMAC on the year, while the Lyons are now 3-4, 0-1 NEWMAC.

In the opening quarter, both teams demonstrated strong defensive efforts, with Smith's
Iseul Park (Ann Arbor, MI/) and Wheaton's Grace Ferguson each holding the opposing offenses scoreless.
Callahan Day (Shady Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) of the Bears made an early attempt on goal at 4:34, but Ferguson was quick to make the save. The quarter saw a penalty corner awarded to Wheaton at 11:26, but Ava Audette's subsequent shot went wide, leaving the score tied at 0-0 as the quarter concluded.
The second quarter began with a defensive showcase, as Park made two crucial saves on back-to-back shots by Ally Slicer at the 23:32 and 23:38 marks, keeping the score level.
Halie Yung (San Jose, CA/Lynbrook) attempted to break the deadlock with a shot at 26:04, but was denied by Ferguson. The quarter concluded without any goals, maintaining the score at 0-0.
The third quarter began with an immediate impact from Day, who scored the opening goal for the Bears at 34:36. Day continued her offensive efforts just under four minutes later, netting her seventh goal of the season at 38:23 to extend Smith's lead. The period highlighted the Bears' persistent offensive efforts, with multiple attempts by
Anouk Bosket (Jordanstown, Northern Ireland/Belfast Royal Academy) and
Isabel Johnson (Fort Worth, TX/Trinity Valley School), each saved by Ferguson, maintaining the score at 2-0 by the end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter began with Yung attempting to widen the lead for the Bears, but her shot went wide at 47:11. Wheaton responded with back-to-back penalty corners by Maddie Hatch at 51:29 and 51:41, but the home team's defense held firm.
Maya Zager (Portland, ME/) put pressure on Wheaton with a shot at 53:17, which was saved by Ferguson. A penalty corner by Day at 54:11 demonstrated Smith's continued offensive efforts, but the quarter concluded without additional scoring, maintaining the Bears' 2-0 victory. This win also marked
Iseul Park's (Ann Arbor, MI/) fourth shutout of the year, showcasing her exceptional goalkeeping skills.
