Emrich, Cambron Lead Bears at Poughkeepsie Scramble

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Smith College tennis team opened its fall season at the Poughkeepsie Scramble last weekend, taking on opponents from Vassar, Bates, Hamilton, SUNY New Paltz, and Division I Marist. The Bears highlighted the weekend with several first collegiate victories and a strong showing in doubles play.

The first-year duo of Ava Emrich (Smyrna, Delaware/Tower Hill School) and Heidi Cambron (Sherbrooke, Canada/Champlain College Lennoxville)  went undefeated in doubles, earning wins over Hamilton, Bates, and SUNY New Paltz.

On the singles side, Smith's newcomers made an immediate impact. Emrich collected her first collegiate singles victory with a hard-fought 7–5 decision over Hamilton's Challapalli before adding an impressive 7–6 win against Marist's Ungerman. Olivia Chin (Bayside, NY/Dominican Academy) earned her first collegiate singles win with a dominant 6–2 performance over Hamilton's Walpole, while Emily Wang (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) secured her first victory with a composed 6–4 decision against Bates' Swire.

Transfer Isa Benitez-Barron also notched her first win for the Bears, battling to a 7–5 victory over Bates' LaFountain.

The Bears continue their fall schedule next weekend when they travel up the road to Vermont to MIddlebury College for an ITA Tournament.
