Field Hockey Downed by Salve Regina

NEWPORT, RI - The Smith College field hockey team was defeated by Salve Regina, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon in a NEWMAC matchup. The Seahawks scored in every quarter, maintaining their offensive pressure throughout the match. Bears' goalkeeper, Iseul Park (Ann Arbor, MI/), recorded six saves, but the team struggled to convert on their four shots on goal.

Smith drops to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC, while the Seahawks improve to 7-1, 1-1 NEWMAC.

First Half Highlights
  •  Despite early pressure from Salve Regina, Park effectively thwarted two shots, maintaining a steady defense. Salve Regina capitalized on a penalty corner situation at the 8:03 mark, with Georgia Costello scoring the first goal of the match, assisted by Jordyn Pineau. 
  • As the first quarter continued, the Bears' defense held firm, preventing further scoring opportunities from Salve Regina. The period closed with the Bears trailing, as the score stood at 1-0 in favor of Salve Regina.
  • The second quarter began with the Bears' defensive efforts highlighted by Park, who made crucial saves against shots by Costello and Natalie Vaughan in the early minutes. Despite Park's efforts, Vaughan managed to score for Salve Regina, extending their lead. The Bears' offense saw attempts from Gemma Polino (Hadley, MA/Williston Northampton) and Anouk Bosket (Jordanstown, Northern Ireland/Belfast Royal Academy), but both were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net, with Bosket's shot saved by Siany Ortez. The quarter closed with Salve Regina holding a 2-0 lead.
Second Half Highlights
  • Julia Decker scored at 33:50 assisted by Elliot Lund, extending their lead to 3-0. Callahan Day (Shady Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) responded with a shot at 35:43, but it was saved by Ortez. Despite a penalty corner opportunity shortly after, the Bears were unable to convert. The quarter ended with no further changes to the score, keeping Salve Regina ahead 3-0.
  • The Seahawks extended their lead early in the fourth quarter with a goal by Costello at 47:14, increasing the score to 4-0. The Bears responded with a penalty corner at 50:01, leading to a shot by Bosket, which was saved by Ortez. Later in the quarter, the Bears earned another penalty corner at 57:50, resulting in a shot from Sam Sparling (Croton on Hudson, NY/Croton Harmon) that was again stopped by Ortez. The quarter concluded with the Bears unable to alter the scoreboard, leaving the final score at 4-0 in favor of Salve Regina.
