AMHERST - The Smith College lacrosse team fell to No. 8 Amherst 22-3 on Tuesday evening. The Bears dip to 3-2 on the year, while the Mammoths improve to 3-0.
Amherst opened the scoring with two goals in the first minute of play and led 8-0 after the first period. The Mammoths began the second period with a tally from Bridget Finley before Smith got on the board with back-to-back goals from
Kyra Hawk (San Jose, CA/The Harker School) and
Skylar Burkhart (Woodinville, WA/Seattle Academy). Amherst continued their offensive firepower to hold an 11-2 lead at the half and 17-2 advantage going into the fourth. Amherst outscored Smith 5-1 in the final period where Burkhard buried her ninth goal of the year.
All three Smith goalkeepers saw action with
Shannon Houtenville (East Windsor, NJ/Highstown) taking the loss, making six saves in 35 minutes of action.
