Lacrosse Cruises Past Mount Holyoke, 20-7

NORTHAMPTON - Kyra Hawk (San Jose, CA/The Harker School) tied her career-high with seven goals as the Smith College lacrosse team cruised to a 20-7 win against Mount Holyoke Saturday afternoon. The Bears improve to 5-2 on the year and begin NEWMAC play 1-0. The Lyons are dealt their first loss of the year to dip to 4-1, 0-1 NEWMAC. Goalkeeper Brooke Testa (Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) earned the win making five saves.

The game commenced with Smith asserting early dominance as Hawk scored the first goal at 12:41, marking her 23rd of the season. Jordan Hoffman (Portland, OR/Jesuit) quickly followed with another goal at 11:45, assisted by Hawk, extending the lead for the Bears. Caroline Sanders (Orange County, CA/Santa Margarita Catholic) added to the tally with a goal at 7:47, maintaining momentum for the home team. Mount Holyoke responded with two goals, one by Emi Bisson at 5:45 and another by Juliana Spaulding at 5:04, narrowing the gap. However, Smith regained control with Layna Fitzgerald (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) scoring at 1:47, followed by another goal from Hawk at 1:04, closing the first quarter with a 5–2 lead.

The Bears extended their lead in the second quarter with a flurry of goals, starting with Sanders scoring at 13:05 to bring her season total to 15. Hawk added to the tally with a goal at 12:16, and Hoffman followed with a score assisted by Jenna Paczkowski (Jupiter, FL/Choate Rosemary Hall) at 9:31. Smith maintained momentum as Paczkowski scored again at 4:36, followed by Sanders and Hawk each adding another goal, pushing the lead to 11–2. The Lyons responded with a late goal by Rory Bernardo at 1:03, but the Bears' defense, including a save by Brooke Testa (Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) at the end of the quarter, kept the advantage secure.

Hawk netted three in the third as the lead grew to 16-5 going into the final period. The visitors opened the fourth with back-to-back goals from Juliana Spaulding. Smith then responded with three more before Spaulding added another with 4:36 on the clock. Brooke Everson (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) rounded out the scoring for the Bears with 26 remaining in the game.
