Bears Split Thursday Slate in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Smith College softball team continued its spring break trip at the Legends Way fields on Thursday, splitting a pair of contests against Plymouth State and Franklin & Marshall.

Game 1: Plymouth State 4, Bears 1

In the morning opener, the Bears struggled to find an offensive rhythm against Plymouth State's Allie Cecere, who held Smith to just four hits.

  • Bears Highlight: Sophie Hasegawa (Palos Verdes Estates, CA/Palos Verdes) provided the spark for the Bears, lacing an RBI triple to left-center in the second inning to score Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point).

  • In the Circle: Violet Peverly (Granby, CT/Loomis Chaffee) went the distance, striking out seven batters while allowing seven hits in a hard-fought loss.

  • Clean Defense: The Bears played error-free softball in the field despite the result.

Game 2: Bears 9, Franklin & Marshall 4

The Bears bounced back in a big way in the afternoon, erupting for eight runs over the first three innings to pull away from the Diplomats.

  • Early Advantage: After falling behind early, the Bears capitalized on multiple Franklin & Marshall errors in the second inning to plate five runs and take control.

  • At the Plate: Ally Knutson (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) led the charge, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Violet Peverly (Granby, CT/Loomis Chaffee) added a key RBI double in the first to jumpstart the rally.

  • Speed on the Basepaths: Smith was aggressive on the bases, recording three stolen bases—including two from Gabbie Chinnis (Charleston, SC/Charleston County School of Arts), who crossed the plate three times.

  • Winning Effort: Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) earned the win, tossing a complete-game four-hitter. She struck out three and allowed only one earned run over 7.0 innings.
