Peverly Powers Smith to NEWMAC Doubleheader Sweep Over Salve Regina

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — Violet Peverly (Granby, CT/Loomis Chaffee) delivered one of the more complete individual performances of the season Friday at Smith Softball Field, and the Bears backed her up on both sides of the day. Smith College (13-10, 5-3 NEWMAC) swept Salve Regina (3-20, 0-8 NEWMAC) by scores of 3-1 in the opener and 9-1 in six innings in the nightcap, extending the Bears' winning streak to four games.

Game 1: Peverly Dominates in the Circle

Peverly set the tone in the opener, tossing a complete-game victory and allowing just three hits over seven innings with six strikeouts. Smith plated a run in the first inning and added two more in the fifth before Salve broke through for a single run in the sixth — the Bears' 3-1 lead held the rest of the way. Peverly threw 104 pitches on the afternoon, 64 of which were strikes.

Ally Knutson (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) paced the offense in Game 1, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and a stolen base. Gabbie Chinnis (Charleston, SC/Charleston County School of Arts) added two hits and an RBI, while Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) and Riley Veenstra (Oakland, CA/Bishop O'Dowd) each drove in a run to round out the scoring.

Game 2: Bears Erupt for Run-Rule Victory

Smith's offense picked up where the pitching left off. The Bears racked up 13 hits in the nightcap and scored nine runs — five in a decisive sixth inning — to trigger the run rule and complete the sweep.

Peverly led the way with the bat this time, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. She keyed the Bears' five-run sixth with an RBI double that scored Knutson, who had opened the inning with a double of her own. Taz Tamai (Cincinati, OH/The Seven Hills School) followed later in the frame with a two-run double that put the game out of reach, while Elinor Washington (Sacramento, CA/Pleasant Grove) capped the inning with an RBI single. Tamai finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Knutson had another multi-hit game, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored across the afternoon, and Veenstra contributed three hits and an RBI in the nightcap.

Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) worked the complete game in Game 2, limiting Salve to one earned run on seven hits over six innings. She struck out four on 90 pitches, 52 of which went for strikes.
